Eating out in Riga is dirt cheap. Beer is roughly a £1 a pint and a pack of cigarettes 70 pence. The national cuisine revolves around mountains of meat (especially pork), stodgy potatoes and peas so if you’ve had your fair share of this staple Latvian diet, move on to their fish restaurants. Soviet-era pollution means oysters are flown in from France, salmon is sold to them by Norway leaving, apart from pike-perch and sea eel, really only the Baltic sprat as a starter – albeit a smokey, pungent little one with a velvety texture which is highly recommended. Also try sturgeon poached in vodka!

For those feeling on the brave side, try the bull’s glands with broad beans in butter sauce!

In addition to traditional Latvian cuisine, there is a wide choice of international foods including Indian, Italian, Japanese, Chinese and French.
